A solo Motorcycle tour of Laos

Off I go this Thursday for one of my dream trips realized.....
A solo motorcycle tour of Laos with a bit of N Thailand just cuz it's so cool.
Why solo?  Where else can you fully realize taking the exact turn on a road you want, spend the exact right amount of time in a special place, and make yourself fully realize who you are with no reliance on anyone but yourself.  Going off to such a peaceful country like Laos where I fully expect to drop down several levels and really get a taste of this Buddhist nation

How do you cross all the I's and dot all the T's before leaving on such a big adventure?
Guide book suggestions  really help.
So with my bare minimums of:
1. Small backpack with clothes, meds, etc
2. Guitar with small battery amp (mini-Marshall stack)
3. Said guide books
4. Necessary documents
5. Motorcycle Helmet
And that is all I am taking.  The rest shall we say, will show itself, the road will show me how to go, the weather will dictate the speed at which I travel, and my heart will show me how best to connect with the people I will meet.

I look forward to posting to this blog along the way.  I have no idea of the availability of internet connections but I will do my best to keep you all current to my whereabouts.

And now off to finish packing and getting my s*#t together.
Sawadee Ka

Sounds like your off to a great start. I remember sleeping in the airport in bangkok. if you have a lay over in Bangkok, thai airways and others have the best lounges free food and drinks and most important some comfortable couches to seep on. Not mention that they have free internet access. You will be surprised about how easy it will be to get internet access everywhere you go, even in some of the most remote spots. More evidence of the western world leaving a lasting footprint in ancient places.

How exciting Jeff! Leave it to you to plan a trip like this -- what an adventure it will be! Psyched to read your stories in this Trip Blog. Oh how I miss Thailand -what a magical place! Have a blast as I know you will. Safe travels, KC

Jeff,

Such a great adventure. I've travelled widely in Northern Thailand & Laos, but only by bus. Being on your own bike will certainly open lots of opportunities. I look forward to following your journey.

There is a very active expat motorcycle touring community based in Chiang Mai. There was a bookstore/cafe on 16 Ban Moonmuang that was the clubhouse for the Northern Chiang Mai cycle group. Check it out as a good resource (they have published books about riding in northern Thailand).

BTW, "Sawadee Ka" is the feminized form of greeting in Thai. You should probably be saying "Sawadee Krap" (unless you have some radical plans during your stop-over in Bangkok ;-)

Cheers,

Stephen

Jefe,

I love Laos. When my feet touched the ground the first time in Luang Prabang, I felt energy shoot up through me like never before. That place is magically peaceful. Maybe you'll fall in love there like I did, highly recommended ;)

Just came back from a truly life-changing time in Peru so travel's on my mind and I'm sending blessings for an equally significant time for you.

With love,
Dara

the closet I ever came to Thailand was a Thaistick. I was quite fond of those however.

I remember someone telling me I better get on the stick so I did.

It must be a blast cruising though the mountain roads on a bike.
Be safe.
